History:

Arrow class runabouts were the culmination of three years of work and several failed prototypes. Larger than the Danube, but with a more aerodynamic design somewhat like the Delta Flyer, the Arrow entered limited production for a testing phase in 2381. Following two years of testing in major Federation systems and some testing at the southern border, Arrow runabouts were approved for widespread usage, and production was increased to full run volumes in 2384. Arrows have been taking the place of the traditional Danube runabout throughout Federation territory in the years since.

An Arrow runabout requires two pilots, though in a pinch, it can be flown by one. As many as 30 can fit in passenger or troop configuration, though in its normal configuration, it seats up to 16. Outfitted with a holographic system in the rear compartment to accommodate the modularity intended with its design, the hold of an Arrow can be changed within moments to suit the needs of the mission.

Class Description:

Arrows utilize the same modular construction as Danube runabouts for interior makeup. They are compatible with standard Starfleet multi-use compartment modules and are much easier to configure than the conventional runabouts, since the warp engines and wings feature a gull design which swing up for easy access to the interior.

The compartment modules fit neatly inside and lock into place for optimum refit capability. Arrows are slightly longer than the standard Danube. This allows a roomier cockpit area, more work stations, and a larger crew complement.

The cockpit and any module may be used as emergency escape pods, complete with independent life support systems, RCS thrusters and combat rations. Should the need arise for emergency egress, the entire warp engine section may be jettisoned, freeing all the modules for independent flight.

Mission Objectives:

Arrow Class Runabouts were designed to complete four general mission types:

  1. Short notice and/or emergency response transportation for scientific expeditions or medical personnel
  2. To act as a base of operations (orbital or landed) for scientific expeditions or medical response teams
  3. Transport of personnel, an intact experiment and/or cargo modules
  4. Perform tactical missions such as: intelligence gathering, including scouting; covert insertion/extraction of personnel; surveillance; to act as a deterrent in threatening situations

Some of the pre-set modules for Arrow runabouts include:

  • Passenger or troop transport - Open hold with seating
  • Transport - Empty hold
